Anesthesia |
|
The use of anesthesia is
necessary to perform many important procedures in veterinary
medicine. At the Erlanger Veterinary Hospital, we use one of the safest
inhalant anesthetics, Sevoflurane, available in veterinary
and human medicine. Even so, we are aware that there are
risks any time a patient is anesthetized.
Our patients who undergo anesthesia are monitored closely by
our technicians using electronic machines for constant
awareness of heart rate, oxygenation, and respiratory rate.
An Electrocardiogram (ECG) is always connected to the
patients as well, so cardiac function can be observed
continuously. Our patient’s heart rate, color, and pulses
are monitored and recorded throughout the entire surgery and
recovery period.
Prior to surgery, we recommend testing a small sample of
blood and analysis of a pre-surgical electrocardiogram(ECG)
to rule out any medical condition that may increase the
risk of anesthesia. Intravenous catheterization and fluid
therapy is very important to keep our patients hydrated
during surgery, maintain blood pressure, and to provide
access to the circulatory system in case of an emergency.
The staff and doctors at the Erlanger Veterinary Hospital take every
precaution to ensure that your pet will safely recover from
any necessary anesthetic event. |
|
|
Laboratory |
|
At
Erlanger Veterinary Hospital we have an In-House laboratory
which allows us to run diagnostic blood chemistries and
packed cell volumes, Heartworm / Lyme / Ehrlichia testing
for dogs, FeLV / FIV testing for cats, T-4 (thyroid) values
on dogs and cats, Cytology, and Intestinal Parasite Exams by
fecal centrifugation. Other blood work, histopathology, or
complex cytology we send to local, state, and national
laboratories. |
|
|
Radiology
and Ultrasound |
|
Radiography and ultrasonography are very helpful types of
diagnostics. We have the abilities to take x-rays and
perform abdominal ultrasounds and echocardiograms in
hospital. |
|
|
Hospitalization |
|
When your
pet comes down with an illness, they may need to stay in the
hospital for diagnostic testing and treatments. If this
becomes the situation, we have an Intensive Care Unit in the
main treatment room for observation of critical cases, a cat
ward for our feline patients for some quiet privacy, as well
as two dog wards for our canine patients, one with large
runs for bigger breeds, the second with smaller cages for
medium and smaller breeds. If hospitalizing a reptile, we
are equipped with an aquarium using the proper method of
light and heating elements. If a patient has a contagious
disease, there is an Isolation Ward with separate
ventilation and sliding glass doors to keep the rest of the
hospital free from contamination. Precautions are taken by
the entire staff to prevent spreading of diseases. |

Pharmacology |
|
Our
extensive in-house pharmacy contains a wide variety of
medications that can be used for immediate treatment of many
different medical issues. From medications for arthritis
pain, to a variety of antibiotics to treat infections, we
have a large variety of medications in stock at all times.
If needed, we can utilize human pharmacies in the area for
medications that are not used as often. |
|
|
Prescription Diets |
|
We have a
large variety of prescription diets available to best suit
your pet’s individual nutritional needs. We carry dry and
canned formula diets from companies such as Hill’s, Eukanuba,
Purina, IVD, and more. We also carry treats that can be
used in patients with special dietary requirements, and
those to help maintain their dental health. Your pet’s food
can be picked up any time during our normal office hours. |
|
Emergency Services |
|
From
ingestion of something they shouldn’t, to misfortune with a
vehicle, or just feeling sick, accidents happen. If a
problem should occur, we do see emergencies during our
regular office hours here in the hospital. If you are unsure
of any situation, please call us and we will guide you in
the right direction. After hours, we do feel that
emergencies are best handled by a fully staffed emergency
clinic. We recommend the Greater Cincinnati Veterinary
Specialty and Emergency Services. |
